Stephen Kinney, DVMDr. Stephen Kinney, our Chief of Staff, is a Winthrop, Maine native. He attended the University of Maine at Orono and completed graduate work at Auburn University in Alabama. His veterinary training was at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was first in his graduating class in 1983.

Returning to Maine, Dr. Kinney had a mixed animal practice for 13 years before concentrating on small pets and household exotics. He has a special interest in shelter medicine and has served on the board of the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook for 15 years. He has also worked closely with the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society in Lewiston for the last 25 years. A strong advocate for spaying and neutering, Dr. Kinney has performed over 2,500 spays and neuters in a single year!

Alexa Ortiz, DVMDr. Alexa Ortiz grew up in Vancouver, Washington and currently resides in Durham, Maine. She received an undergraduate degree from Oregon State University and earned a DVM degree from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Prior to joining the Auburn Animal Center team, Dr. Ortiz was a Wildlife Vet Intern at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Her special interests include exotics and wildlife.

In her spare time, Dr. Ortiz enjoys hiking, camping, photography, and travelling. She currently does not have any pets of her own, but plans to have a few very soon!
